Never underestimate how crushing it is to have to do the same monotonous tasks over and over again…
But at least there has been some progress with Sheryl since the last post. Her main parts are closely edging towards being ready to be painted, but there’s still a while to go yet.
Here’s how she looks at present, posing alongside my latest aquisition, Figma Aegis. Took me ages to get her as I had yet another run-in with the postal service in my area and their *ahem* lack of ability. But that’s another story (I’m racking up quite a few with this lot).
Aegis seems somewhat less impressive than what I had thought she would be. Heck, the dimension diver kit which I have been looking at for some time and Danny Choo was showing off a little while ago looks much better, but I don’t have the funds to go for one of those. Man, that was the first time I was actually envious of one of his freebies!!
But back to Sheryl. All I can say is that she’s a real piece of work… I don’t think I’ve had to spend this much time on a cleanup for a kit before. Going through a constant cycle of sand -> fill gaps -> sand -> prime is really starting to take it’s toll, esp since I can only find the time to prime the kit at the weekends, when I actually have sunlight to work with!!
Still got a little more cleaning to do on the main body. The hair especially needs some attention.
Most of the bits are actually from the putty I added to hide the gap between 2 bits of hair so they should be easy to smooth out. I just needed to prime it first to see the extent of the problem.
I’ve also managed to fill most of the pinholes which littered the various parts. Seriously, I don’t think I have ever done a kit with this many pinholes before!!
You can see some of the holes in the pic above. But those were just for the ones on the body part. The other parts had their own holes to worry with. In fact, I still haven’t finished doing up the ones I found on the back of the skirt!
Ah yes, the skirt with the massive gap. You may remember that I posted a pic showing the scale of the problem…
I had hoped to fill the gap with my standard milliput, which I use for most parts gaps, but for something this size, it simply was not up to the task.
So I had to break out the sculpey clay!
Took a while to get it in all the right areas. But luckily, since it’s resin I’m working with, there were no problems with bunging the whole thing into the oven to bake the clay hard to leave a solid fill for the gap.
And that’s where I’m up to at the moment. Still need to sand down the excess and make it smooth but the gap is definitely gone. At this point, I think I’ll treat the skirt as a separate part for now. Otherwise I’ll be prepping the parts for ages. The main body is almost ready for painting and that’s where the fun begins.
Sheryl really is testing all sorts of my abilities at the moment but I’m still going to soldier on and get her finished. And at least, it seems that she’s even giving her creator a bit of a hard time as well!
But for now, things are slowing down a little for Sheryl and I took on a little side project. Over at tomopop, a figure site and community which I check out (it’s part of the same group as Destructoid), They’re doing a little monthly figure photo feature where they give a theme and post pics from the community which they like and follows said theme.
The current theme is “the Holidays” so there have been a few Christmas themed pics around the sites community posts. But reading it got ideas rolling and I have started on a custom Hoihoi-san which I hope to complete before the holidays, which doesn’t leave me with that much time. Luckily, I’ve already build the basic kit so It’s “just” the modding to do now.
I’ll do a complete post when she’s done, but I will say that the kit was incredibly easy. I managed to snap Hoihoi together in just over an hour! That’s damn fast!!
As for what I have planned for her, If you have a copy of the english translated manga, I’ll simply say page 11.

I got Aegis recently too, along with the Meiya Figma. They’re the only two Figmas I have and I kinda thought that they’d be bigger, like around the size of Kotobukiya’s Play Arts figures (which are awful action figures, by the way). I like Meiya very much, she’s got this great angry scowl and a big sword and a tight suit, but Aegis looks a bit goofy with the happy face on.
That’s one scary gap. That’s bigger than the gap in my other Meiya figure’s arm. That’s bigger than the hole in one of my shoes (I’d get new shoes, but shoes are about the same price as a figure, and my socks dry out after a couple of hours anyway).
Meiya was a bit of a weird choice for a figma IMO. I think she’s one of those characters which is better suited to fixed pose figures. Besides, there’s no way figma would make it 100% accurate and add the see thru material.
I’m not really big on poseable figures either. I’m not the kind of guy to carry them everywhere in a box and take them out for some random photoshoot in public and aside from the KOSMOS ver 4 which Alter are making, there are none on the horizon which have piqued my interest.
Aegis definitely looked better in the promo pics tho.
And the gap was a bit of a monster. Even the original sculptor had to use a fair bit of putty to cover that hole!
But seriously, How could you stand walking around in wet socks, with the squishy feeling and sound? urgh… maybe a plastic bag inside the shoe as well?
Yeah, the purple suit instead of the transparent suit was a real disappointment. I might be more into Figmas if they were a bit bigger and a bit less expensive, but I don’t think I’m all that interested in the larger-scale articulated stuff that GSC is making; big ball joints and pivots aren’t really all that attractive to me.
I tried to glue the hole in my shoe shut, but that predictably did not work very well. Maybe I’ll try using some duct tape from the inside, or maybe stitching the hole shut. Having wet socks really does suck though, I have to agree.
You mean the Actsta line? Yeah, I’m not really interested in them either. Or at least I wasn’t until I found out that liquidstone helped design the figures. If they make a Fate in True sonic form and Nanoha (probably in exceed mode), then I’ll be all over them, but I have no interest in Subaru and Teanna.
In the same situation as you with my current WIP but it is on a smaller scale….can’t imagine if I am in your current situation I might have just abandon the project all together! Hoi san has quite the number of arsenals, would be interesting to see whats mods you are gonna do on her ^^
Ps : @ Tier Squishy socks not a very nice thought lol
The mods will be quite simple, with the majority of it being a colour swap. Having said that, it hasn’t gone exactly according to plan so far…
Yikes! That’s a lot of pinholes. I always hate when I get kits like these but she’s coming along nicely. This kit is starting to grow on me especially now I see all the detail better with the primer coat on it
.
LOL @ the sculptor having issues putting her together.
