Small Soldier!

Seems every year around this time, I get into a melancholic mood and have difficulty building the drive to build my GK. The lack of sunlight doesn’t really help much either as it makes it harder to find the time to do the priming, which is where Sheryl is at right now…

But I guess such times allow me to look at my other purchases properly instead of just have them on display. So for this week, I thought I would take a look at my most recent Revoltech purchase. Orichalcum Reycal!!

I first posted pics back with my October loot post but now she gets a post all to herself!!

I pretty much fell in love with Reycal as soon as I saw the first promotional pics. I think it was Ngee Khiong where I first saw her and he was kind enough to included a link to the first translated chapter of the Manga. There was also something really familiar with the design so, after a bit of digging, I found out that the manga author was Tsunashima Shirou, who also did Jinki: Extend!! Having really enjoyed all I could find on jinki and jinki: Extend (save for the pretty awful anime), it comes as no surprise that I enjoyed reading Reycal as well. It has a bit of a large “Shonen jump” feel to it (you know: new enemy appears -> enemy beats up hero -> hero powers up to new level, in before “over 9000″ -> hero defeats villain) but it’s still pretty fun.

Anyway, the story goes that the main guy, Mitsuaki Tsukurugi, gets given some special clay from a “mysterious teacher” and, when he makes a figure from the clay, she comes to life. Mangafox has the first 3 chapters translated for those interested. It may not sound much but, like jinki, the chapters are around 50 pages each so there’s plenty of reading to be had! Those 3 chapters constitute the entire first volume afterall!

This is Reycals original pose, just before she becomes alive, and promptly hits her masters face…

I have to admit that the announcement of Reycal was a big surprise as the manga is still relatively recent, with only 4 volumes out (so we can guess maybe 16 chapters or so) and I don’t think it’s gained major popularity, afterall Jinki wasn’t hugely popular but still reasonably successful.
The revoltech would also have very limited appeal to the western market because nobody will know who she is!!!
Heck, the only other person I know who has Reycal is Q!!

Reycal, handling one of my modelling tools, much like how she does in the first chapter of the manga… My full sized modelling knife was too big for her to hold properly.

…But it’s not like I didn’t try!!

Overall, I think Reycal is pretty close to 1/1 scale. (EDIT: the manga has her height at 19cm, which makes her a little taller than the Revoltech, which is around 14~15cm) Although her height does tend to vary a little from page to page.
One thing which did surprise me was the choice to make her into a full revoltech figure instead of putting her into the fraulein line. There were also some other design questions which popped up as I was taking the photos but the reason for it will be shown later.

Reycal comes with 2 additional faces, an “attacking” face looking to the right and a “shy” face looking towards the left.

Overall, the design of Reycal seemed OK but not great. The poseablility is great but, as expected, the Revoltech joints were quite obvious and somewhat oversized as well with no additional bonus given when compared to frauleins of figmas, or at least initially.

In fact, with the pic above, you can see that the elbow joints look a little large for the arm! but my chief complaint would be the neck!

Even Reycal is embarrassed by her neck. It’s just too long and far too visible. Most figures have just a single joint to hold the head in place, but Reycal has 2 with a plastic cylinder tring (and failing) to hide it. The shoulders also lack the grace of the Frauleins as well. I’m sure they could have “borrowed” the idea from that line for Reycal!

The designers also added joints to the hair to allow it to move a little. Seemed really pointless initially…

There were some really good design ideas tho!

Here’s Reycals hand next to Figma Fates. As you can see, the connection for Reycal is a smooth cylinder while fates has a ball at the end. At first glance, you would think that the figma hand design would be better as the cylinder design for the revoltech might make it more susceptible to falling off, but the fit is tight enough to eliminate the problem.
But the thing about the Figma design is that if you keep changing the hands (and you will!) then eventually, the rubber on the wrist which holds the hand in, will eventually be unable to return to it’s original shape due to repeated stress and the wrist will become more and more loose the more you do parts swapping. Worst case scenario, you could end up damaging it to the point where it is unable to hold the hand parts in at all!!

That problem isn’t present with the Revoltech idea! It’s not infallible, but I bet in repeated tests, the revoltech wrist will outlast the figma ones.

Reycal also comes with her “armour howl” “knight Eagle”

It comes with pretty much no extra features of poseablility, but that’s because it’s main function isn’t to retain it’s shape. Instead, it’s meant to combine with Reycal!!
So it goes from this…

To this

The combining feature is pretty simple when you put the 2 together, but forming Knight Eagle back again afterwards can be annoying.

But what you end up with afterwards is this!

(I was going to to a youtube video showing the complete combining feature but I was too lazy it proved too difficult in the end. But I might add it in later)

It was this feature which made me fall in love with the figure because, for some reason, it reminded me of this!

Anyone else remember Samurai Pizza Cats? Fond childhood memories of my last Saturday morning Cartoon in the UK before I gave it all up and had to go to to school on Saturdays.
Seriously tho, I can’t be the only person who thought of this similarity!

Aside from looking pretty cool, Adding the armour actually makes some sense of the design issues I mentioned earlier!

The long neck allows reycal to see over the chest armour (and the neck itself becomes less visible) and the gauntlets on her arms are a litttle wider than her standard arms so fit the joints much better!
The gimmick also explains why Reycal is a revoltech. She simply couldn’t be anything else! The armour parts requre the removal of the forearms to put the gauntlets on and the armour on the thighs are much easier to add on if you pull the lower legs from the thighs first!. You can’t do something like that with figmas or frauleins without permanent damage!

The hair movement idea is also explained as it allows the hair to avoid getting in the way of the wings and connection to the stand.
However, the armour does tend to restrict poseability a little compared to before

One of Reycals attacks from chapter 2. Seriously!! She fires herself, with her weapon in that position, at the enemy! Would you also believe that the staff point is also made of wood?

Overall, I think I would have a hard time recommending reycal to others, primarily because she is almost unheard of and explaining things would take time. You also get the feeling that she’s more like an experiment to see what kaiyodo can do with the revoltech line and how they can diversify. Since reycal, we’ve had Alien revoltech, transforming valkyrie revoltechs and zoids revoltechs so diversity in their tech is one of their strong points.
But at the same time, I really like reycal for one simple reason, she’s really fun!! I know a lot of collectors of other lines such as figmas take them all over the place and play with them but I don’t do that. I tend to treat figmas and frauleins like my other figures, I set them in a pose and that’s about it. Occasionally, I will change the pose but not that often. I don’t take them out and do random photoshoots and the like but I found myself constantly playing around with reycal.
It’s a bit of a shame that She’s likely to be forgotten due to lack of exposure of the source material, kinda like Krauser and the DMC revoltechs. Remember them? But perhaps this is just the start of things. There are other characters in the manga which could be given the revoltech treatment and the combining idea might be used for other franchises, Saint Seiya perhaps?

In any case, at the very least Kaiyodo have given me a very fun figure to mess around with and expanded their profile over just the “poseable human” figures done by figmas and which is a market which is quickly reaching oversaturation (or it might be there already)

Nice huh..especially if you have the winged that get in “Revolrama” ;)

True… Tho I really think that the wings would benefit more from being made of something a little sturdier than just a piece of paper…
Might give it a shot tho.

I think revoltechs are more suited to mechs…somehow their human type revoltechs are that good…big joints at neck and elbows are a big no no for me though…

But then she does look good with all that armor on!! ;)

It’s true that Reycal on her own would have looked much better as a fraulein or figma but then they wouldn’t have been able to do the knight reycal combination gimmick. So it’s a bit of a balancing act. With the armour on, she looks fine but without it… yeah…

Because mechas tend to be more blocky, they are able to hide the joints more easily and people are less likely to notice size issues like they will with a human figure. But it’s not like they haven’t done human revoltechs before after all.

I don’t know who this character is, but I’ve never had a problem receiving a recommendation to buy a figure of a cute half-clothed girl. I’m not a big action figure guy, although I did recently get a couple of Figmas.

I’m not an action figure guy either. My list of figmas and revoltech frauleins number 10, including this one!
A far cry from the others who seem to buy every single one which comes out, like the 10 “different” lucky star variations…

At least I only have 1 (soon to be 2) nendoroids…

Very True, and sadly Im affected by it… Hopefully she will still be around until I can buy online, again

I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Afterall, nobody knows about reycal so she’ll be sticking around for a bit longer I think.
I think she’s worth getting but if someone asked me why esp over some others in the line (or competing ones), I’d be hard pressed to explain…

Samurai Pizza Cats… I remember a couple of my friends raving on and on about how great the show was and how they’d get up early before school to catch it on TV. This is the first time I’ve actually heard the opening (on youtube just now) or seen a part from the show though I’ve sorta been meaning to check it out for the longest time but have not cared enough to actually remember.

Read volume 1 of Reycal about a year ago. It’s good for a light read, though I’d put it in the category of private indulgences.

The character Reycal is in essence a garage kit come to life, so maybe that’s why there’s a figure of her despite the series’ modest fan base. My guess anyways.

The show was really awesome! The japanese original was already a parody of sentai shows and so the English rewrite was effectively a parody of a parody. One which frequently broke the 4th wall and actually made little sense when you thought about it.

For me, Reycal is simply an entertaining read, I will get it as soon as I hear that the translation is done (I’m too lazy to hunt for Raws, tho I did find chapters 2~6) but it doesn’t stimulate the mind like, say, monster.
I think Kaiyodo picked Reycal for an experiment to see if they were able to do a decent job with the armour gimmick. Since the manga is pretty recent, then they could probably get the license to make a figure more cheaply than some of the better known titles, and the manga gets free publicity.
If they continue with it, then maybe they’ll go for better known titles. As I mentioned above, Saint Seiya would be a prime candidate for this sort of thing, if it wasn’t for the fact that there’s already a line of figures which do the same idea. But those are much larger than revoltechs, and since when did these companies care that someone else is already doing what they want to try?

You are not alone regarding the cold and dark winter at this time of the year. A friend of mine once said that it may have something got to do with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), but I am not so sure about that.

But anyway, yes a Reycal review! Funny how we both have known about it on Ngee Khiong, but then there aren’t a lot of many sites or blogs that have mentioned this either.

For a line focusing on mecha and super robots, it’s very unusual to see Reycal getting on Yamaguchi line, especially when it’s sculpted by Yamaguchi himself. You have a point about Reycal possibly being an experiment for Revoltech to do transformations on future items, which I recall Ngee Khiong mentioning as well.

Btw nice poses there, especially with her original statue pose! You did a better job than me on the sitting ones as they look natural and elegant there, and it’s cool to see her with those “weapons” you have there :o

One can’t compare Reycal to figma’s quality, but then as you said Reycal is designed to withstand more abuse than the figma girls (and guys) – well my Reycal actually comes with damaged joint for the left knee but it still works fine (just no clicking noises). Well, Revoltechs are generally designed for high playability. I would think that figmas are a bit fragile to be played around constantly, therefore I only change poses with them occasionally and display them as they are.

Now that you show me a video of Samurai Pizza Cat, I did remember seeing it on TV in Hong Kong when I was still very young, but then I did not watch much TV back then so it quickly got forgotten in my messy sea of memories…

Regarding on the poseable figure thing, you can be right about the market will or have already reached the saturation point, just like moe anime stuff in general. With Fräulein and Figutto coming in spring next year, there’s gonna be more than we want there.

Added a link of your review to my blog. Nice review in general for something that hardly anyone knows about!

Thanks for the link and I’m pretty sure that my melancholy is not down to SAD. If anything, I dislike summer more because I have hayfever!!
It is a shame that few people know of Reycal, but then the same happened to the DMC revoltechs simply because the line was released before the anime and the western release of the manga, which is awesome BTW. GO TO DMC!!!!

Sounds like you and I have similar display methods for our poseable figures. I do try for the more simple and natural poses for these types of figures over more dynamic ones. Not too sure why tho. Same for figures in general. I don’t find the really dynamic ones to be that great.
And I really don’t know what to make of all the bloggers who take them outdoors for photoshoots. Radiant Dreamer has a post about when he met up with a bunch of them in Singapore. I’m sure they’re great guys but it must be annoying as hell to carry a box of parts and figures everywhere, then set them up for the shots, all the while in public!
I was sad to read that your Reycal was less than perfect but mine didn’t seem to have any problems at all. No loose joints and the paintjob was pretty decent. Knight Eagle had a few scuffles but that was about it.

I probably would have forgotten about samurai Pizza cats as well, had it not been my last Saturday morning Cartoon show. I can’t remember any of the others I used to watch, but I remember that one!!!
Still awesome, even to this day!

And the poseable figure market may be reaching saturation point, but companies are still going “me too” and people are still buying them! Tho, the next one I’ll be getting is Laevatin and then KOSMOS.
